Plans for the David O. McKay building began in 1952 after an evaluation by the Brigham Young University College of Education concluded that the existing building for the College of Education were no longer meeting the growing needs of the program. Plans were officially announced in February of 1954 with the completion deadline being set for December of the same year. Chad John Flake was born December 28, 1929 in Snowflake, AZ. He served a mission in the British Isle from 1949 to 1951. He attended Northern Arizona University and Brigham Young University. He was hired at Brigham University as General Reference Librarian and finished his career at Brigham Young University as Curator of Special Collections. Mr. Flake passed away on June 18, 2003.
